Kindergarten Curriculum
The main focus of the Kindergarten curriculum is Language Arts, Math, and Religion. For Language Arts, we expect the children to be able to read simple stories independently and write simple 5-sentence stories independently by the end of the school year. For Math, we expect a firm knowledge of concepts- addition and subtraction, number sense to 100, sorting and graphing, money (coins), tallying, calendar and time, measurement, and problem solving. For Religion, we expect the children to know the basic prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary, prayer before meals, Guardian Angel), participate appropriately in a monthly All School Mass, and have a good knowledge of Social and Christian morals. At the end of the year, we host an All School Mass where the children are readers and presenters during the mass.
Throughout the year, Kindergarten has several major seasonal and/or religious based projects. In October, we concentrate on the Rosary as well as Halloween. The students make a decade of the Rosary from beads and string. At Halloween, the children participate in a Social where they complete 6 stations including crafts and treats to celebrate. In November, we focus on the history of Thanksgiving and make Friendship Soup. We also learn about different saints. In January, we focus on winter as well as social justice. We learn about Martin Luther King Jr., and other important leaders. In February, we learn about St. Valentine, Presidents, and the beginning of Lent. All projects and curriculum follow the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Curriculum Guidelines and California State Standards. They also integrate the school-wide learning expectations.
Kindergarten participates in several field trips throughout the school year. Field trips are both on- and off-campus. The field trips are aligned with the Social Studies and Science curriculum. Kindergarteners learn about community helpers. We visit the local fire station, grocery store, and pet store. A police officer visits us on-campus and discusses safety. Kindergarteners also participate in an on-campus workshop with Kidspace Museum. We go to the Zoo and the pumpkin patch/farm.
